This lavishly packaged 4cd set contains singles and Peel session recordings by some of John’s Favourite artists .The big players and the one hit wonders. The chart toppers and chart bottomers. By choosing a selection of classic session tracks – some famous some not, some familiar some rare – and a smattering of John’s favourite singles otherwise largely forgotten, plus some clips from the archive of John’s own links, the hope is that, at certain moments from track to track, this set will give the listener, just fleetingly, a sense of what the Peel show felt like in successive key periods of its evolution.
It’s been a tough call, the set could have been made 10 times over and still barely scratched the surface of the Peel’s shows. Each of us will have at least one favourite session band or track that is missing here. But what has been compiled is astounding;
23 unreleased recordings by artist such as Bloc Party, Free, Hole, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Cure and Elvis Costello. Obscure 7” singles and festive 50 favourites and John’s only ever appearance on record are all on here. The artwork features rare and unseen photos and many of the artists have written personal recollections of their times spent listening to John’s shows, recording sessions for him or meeting him in person.
